The Gospel of Mark – #24 – A New Kind of King
In Jesus day, no king would have ever asked his followers to “take up a cross and follow him.” Never. But Jesus was a new kind of King, presenting a new kind of Kingdom, inviting His followers to “deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him.”

The Gospel of Mark – #23 – Don’t You Get It?
Repeatedly, the Lord asks us to see and to hear, and to do so with more than just physical eyes and ears.  Jesus is always doing something in our lives that is far deeper than some physical work.  The disciples heard His message, and saw His miracles, but they were missing the point.  Are we?

The Gospel of Mark – #22 – Enough for the Dogs, Too
While the Jews were “seated at the table” as the first heirs of the kingdom of God, there was more than enough to supply those seated at the table, and the dogs underneath it.  And, a Canaanite woman persisted in her plea, and found that the Master was willing to supply her need, just as He was the needs of Israel.  How wonderful it is to receive, even crumbs, from the Master’s table.

    The Gospel of Mark – #21 – I Might Be a Pharisee If…
The Pharisees were looking for any means by which they could condemn Jesus and His disciples.  And when they found it, they took every opportunity to exploit it - it would be the battle of “Tradition vs. Truth.”

The Gospel of Mark – #20 – Down from the Mountain, into the Storm
The exhilaration of feeding the thousands was at its peak.  Then, without explanation, Jesus immediately sent His disciples into the ship, and into the storm.  Notice how God not only creates the recognition of our need, but also offers His abundant supply!

The Gospel of Mark – #19 – Start With What You Have
While it didn’t seem like much - 5 loaves and 2 small fish - it was all Jesus required.  When we begin with what we have, Jesus takes it, rejoices over it, multiplies it, improves it, and returns it!

The Gospel of Mark – #18 – The War Within
Mark Twain once said, “Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.”  The problem is, not only do few have a sleepless conscience, most also have sleepless nights because of a sleepless conscience.  As we see in this passage, Herod must have had many sleepless nights.

The Gospel of Mark – #17 – What Makes the Master Marvel
Two times in Scripture, we are told that Jesus “marveled.”  Once, He was looking for something that should have been there, but was not; and the other time, He did not expect to find something, and it was there. And, both times He marveled, it was connected to faith.

The Gospel of Mark – #16 – Desperate Times, Desperate Measures
A father had nowhere else to turn.  His daughter lay on the very brink of death.  He was desperate and must find Jesus.  A woman, who had been sick for the past 12 years, had spent all of her resources, and had only been made worse, believed that the answer she needed could be found in Jesus.  She, too, was desperate.  Yes, desperate times equal desperate measures.
